Experimental plug-in

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

I decided to release an experimental plug-in for FuturixImager 5.9.4 – it replaces built-in support for JPEG, PNG, and TIFF formats with WIC-based one. I heard that it might be faster on Vista and Windows 7 – I cannot see that in my tests, but may be someone else will?

Installation instructions:

  1. Download plug-in (it is just 6kb :-) ).
  2. If you are on Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003 – check that you have WIC installed. You already have it if you are on Vista or Windows 7.
  3. Unpack the only file in ZIP archive (fxwic.dll) into FuturixImager folder (same folder as fximager.exe file).
  4. Launch FuturixImager, open “Options” (in “Tools” menu), switch to “Plug-ins” tab, click on “Scan for new plug-ins”, and click “OK”.

After installation FuturixImager will try to use WIC (Windows Imaging Component) for loading JPEG, PNG, and TIFF images. If you want to uninstall that plug-in – just delete fxwic.dll file and scan for new plug-ins again (this scan is actually optional).

If you tried this plug-in – please write your feedback in the comments to this post. If significant number of users will see some speed ups, I will include this plug-in as an option in the next version of Imager :-)
